Zounds! I’ve been slacking off with my Gigposter posts! Luckily, this week I remembered. H is a disappointing category for designers on Gigposters.com. Out of a couple hundred there were only a couple really great bits. My eyes are not happy with me for subjecting them to some of the really really bad ones. Yawn. However, now they can rest easy when they look at these puppies! Here you go! Enjoy!

Zach Hobbs

I really like the mad jumble of his posters. He does some interesting things with faces and colors, but this is by far my favorite. The colors, line quality and chunky nature of this one is really great. I love how the band name nestles into itself and creates a nice blocky chunk. And how can you not love a cyclops?!

Lewis Heriz

This particular poster is interesting because it mimics a newspaper ad, cramming all sorts of extraneous information into a small space and yet the band name and important information is still dominant. That, my friends, is hard to do in black and white. His other posters play with color and shape much more so than this one would make you think. Check them out if you’re curious…

Josh J. Holinaty

He only has three posters and all three feature beautiful illustrations and color. This one is my favorite for three reasons:

I like the color blue and goats

The way he treats type by putting it into ribbons and cutouts is fabulous

I REALLY like blue and goats.

Hula Hula

This is the only poster they have up on gigposter. I don’t usually like posters that feature photographs but this is a rare exception. The movement through the poster is nice and strong, the colors are good and, most of all, the photograph plays such a minor roll that I can ignore it. I like that.

Dan Harrill

There are only two posters by Dan on Gigposter, but they’re both great. This particular one reminds me of Terry Gilliam’s work

Bennett Holzworth

Again, the screen printed look and the interesting typography hooks me in every time. Oh so nice. Bennett features the screen printed look throughout most of his posters.

Houndstooth Design

I love love love the colors in the Devendra Banhart poster! I know that particular band as well, and I think the poster really reflects the music as well. I will always have a soft spot for screen printed posters (or ones that look like they’ve been screen printed). The work and care and aesthetic that goes along with screen printing is something that shows in each poster as opposed to creating flat colors on the computer. Nice.

Hammerpress

Ooooohhh! The detail, the colors, the typography! What’s not to drool over in these posters? They’re all like this, and they’re all interesting in a consistantly well-done way. CHECK their work OUT! Go, now. Do it.

David Head

The shapes in these posters are interesting, especially the way he’s drawn the faces in Headache City. It’s simple and yet graphically powerful in their simplicity.

Wow, it’s been a while! Sorry I’ve been a lazy bag of bones when it comes to these gigposters. They’re a bit of a time suck, and now I’ve got a little time to suck, so here’s this week’s installment! Welcome to the letter “G“.

Garage Collective

I really love the off kilter way the type is set on these posters. They’re delightfully grungy…

Gentle Mystery

There is only one poster under Gentle Mystery but it’s a great one. The colors and rough shapes are really beautiful.

Genesse

Ooooo! The hand drawn lettering makes this poster. Genesse only has a few posters up, and this one was by far my favorite. The way the ascenders follow the lines of the buildings in the background is very sweet.

Rebecca Gimenez

Rebecca only has these three poster up but their clean lines and sweet images caught my eye. I can’t wait to see what else she comes up with.

Patrick Giroux

Has a bunch of posters up. He plays with different combinations of type, letters, color and sizes. Everything looks like it’s been letter pressed (whether it was or not is almost moot because the look is so successfully mimicked that it passes as letterpress for me… if it isn’t actually).

Emily Glaubin

All of her posters have the same zany colors and use of type… if you’ve ever listened to the band Animal Collective, this is what their music would look like if it was translated into pictures.

Johann Gomez

I love the hairy texture on the C in this particular poster. I can’t imagine how long it would have taken to draw it… so long. Everything about this poster rocks my socks… it’s telling a story and at the same time it’s conveying the information really well.

Eddie Gossage

The beard… ’nuff said. If you know Iron & Wine you know how perfect this poster is for them. It always tickles me when I recognize the band and can see how well or how badly the poster suits the music.

Samantha Grasso

Reasons this makes me happy

1.) This lady can DRAW!

2.) There are three panels with text at the bottom spanning all three (great layout)

3.) Hand lettering always makes me happy.

Alyson Graves

There is an arm, a shadow and text. Simple, and yet the combination of hand lettering traveling up the arm and the type following the outside is a really difficult trick to pull off. Not only is there good hierarchy here but it’s also a beautiful poster that I would totally hang on my wall.

Gary Grimshaw

This is a really beautiful poster. The typography fits those spaces so well… oh I just wish that this was a better picture! It pays to take good pictures of your work, folks.

Julia Green

I have no idea who the Watson Twins are, but these sweet little faces and the proportions of their limbs makes me want to find out.

Eleanor Grosch

It seems like there’s always one artist in each section that I fall deeply and irrivocably in love with and Eleanor is that person for the “G” section. Every single one of her posters is so gorgeous and, even though there are animals in most of them, she manages to make them feel like they totally belong on a gigposter. CHECK OUT THE REST OF HER WORK! Gotta gotta gotta go see it!

Lionel Guzman

Again, I’m such a sucker for hand lettering. The colors work really well here and ever square inch of this poster is makingme want to dance. Can you see the little pipe-smokin’ man in here? Little details like that are sweet surprises…

Well…. it’s that time of week again ladies and gents! Here’s the next installment of gigposters from me, straight to your pretty little eyeballs. There was a surprising number of completely gorgeous posters in the F section, maybe I should change my name to something starting with F so that the likelihood I’ll produce something eye-wateringly good will go through the roof.
Maybe not.

Shepard Fairey

only has a handful of posters up but the ones he does have are pretty great. Russian Constructivism, anyone? Yikes that’s cool.

Shaun Flynn

He only has one, but the one he’s got is great. I love the colors and the movement he’s created with lines.

Ryan Finnerin

I like the retro feel he has through all of his posters.

Pablo Font

I really love the textures, shapes and colors he’s using in this particular poster.

Nevin Flinchbaugh

This is one of my favorite posters of all time. The fingers as little people and the typography in the shape of a hand! Ahhh it’s too good…

Matt Flowers

Is just getting started, but there’s a definite clean feeling that he carries through each of his posters that makes him one of my instant favorites. He has great colors and a really nice perspective on what it is to be a gigposter.

Luca Farinella

I really like this poster. He only has two posters, but the way he’s divided this illustration of a fist and the lines radiating off with information is really nice.

Lou Frascogna

Ok, I’m going to warn you now… there’s a rain/umbrella theme to this post. For some reason three different artists in the F section have used this theme in their posters whereas none of the other artists so far have. I love the idea that the same subject can be used and yet evoke totally different emotions.

JP Flexner

I have a definite thing for posters that use three or four layered colors to create a 3d-without-the-3d-glasses look and this one is no exception. This guy is prolific, but this is my favorite poster of his.

James Flames

How can you not totally dig this guy’s name!? Especially when you see how gorgeous his posters are. I don’t love all of them, but I absolutely love the ones I do. Little details like information in an eyebrow, his use of big, graphic lettering, and the quirky subject matter make these posters for me. Oh man, don’t stop now James Flames, these are so good!

Furturtle Printworks

I love just about every poster they have on gigposter. The deer, however, are my favorite. The line quality and the negative vs. positive space blows me away. They have a great eye for fonts in that they suit whatever the rest of the poster is up to. They have a ton of posters up and it’s worth taking a gander.

Fritte

I love this particular illustration, not as a poster, but as a little drawing. The line work is so great!

Francoise Massacre

There are some interesting moments in Francoise Massacre’s posters. This hand is an example of neat typography, cool illustration and interesting color. Nice job Francoise.

Fluorescent Hill

I can’t get over how sweet this little bear is. Their color work is really nice and the themes for their posters lend a sweet, innocence to these illustrations.

FloraFauna

I really like these posters. The scale, color and themes jive together in a super aesthetically pleasing way. How can you not love something like a fabric, flower suit!?

Fast Friends Inc.

Every single one of these posters tickles me pink! These make me so giddy that I don’t know where to look, I would definitely tear these off of whatever lamp post I saw them on and plaster my walls with their zany energy. Yes, I’m talking to you donky-unicornman with a giant bow tied to your neck!

Fanfare Parade

I like their more recent work. All the detail twisting around on the Tallest Trees poster and the textures on Tommy and the Whale caught my eye and kept it cruising around.

Fake French

Is zany like Fast Friends Inc. but in a quieter, stranger way. There are lots of lovely colored intestines happening, and some interesting typography chopping around on their posters. I like.

Fageta

There are only two posters, but I love both of them for their creative typography. This is obviously the early days for Fageta, but I like where it’s going.

Factor27

I want to hang their light bulb poster on my room and trace my finger down each string in a sort of compulsive ritual every morning when I wake up. There’s something about the weight of the lines, the subject and those great light bulbs that makes me smile.

Estelle Flores

I really love the colors and shapes she’s chosen for her posters.

Dirk Fowler

Wow, what a name. These posters knock my socks off. The Devotchka poster caught my eye first and I had to see more of his work after that. I love Devotchka and that poster totally communicates their music. Plus, those Willy Nelson brades are so great! I didn’t even have to read the name to get that it was Willy. Talk about brand recognition!

Dale Flattum

Yeah yeah, I love bunnies, and yes this one is painting red hair on a dude with a cigar. ‘Nuff said.

Bartek Felczak

Has some very sweet little illustrations. I don’t think his style is quite formed all the way yet, but it’s heading somewhere soft and pretty.

GigPosters – E -

Phew! There were only two pages (instead of the usual five or so) in the “E” section of designers on gigposters this week. Again, I say “Phew” to you.

Traci Edwards

Has a great range of subjects for her posters. There are birds, people, hearts being filled up with a gas pump… I like it when there’s a broad range but a consistent feeling tying them together.

Egor Rogalev

He only has this single poster, but it’s a really great illustration. I can’t wait to see what else he’ll put up.

Mathew Egan

I know this is a little different from what I usually pick, but the detail in the border and illustration makes this poster. His style isn’t quite my flavor, but his other posters have something in their illustration that caught my attention.

Entire Catalogue

Most of their work is for this RaRaRiot band and I love all of those posters. The contrast between the sweet illustration of the diver and the tragic ending makes me smile all goofily and covet this poster.

El Jefe

With a name like El Jefe, how can you not have AWESOME posters? I mean really, come on. It’s a good thing that he does then, isn’t it? Most of his work is the softer, children’s story book sort of illustration but then he throws in something dark like the Ladytron poster and it just sweetens the deal. Nice job El Jefe… keep rocking that name.

Emily Design

I really really love the Paramore poster. I like her most recent style, but I can totally leave her earlier work. There’s something sweeter, softer and more definite about her recent work, including the Parmore poster.

GigPoster – Gigo Elmoselhi -

I was collecting bits of awesome from gigposter in prep for this weekend’s “E” episode when I found Gigo. It looks like he’s just starting (he only has eight posters) but the fact that each and every one of them is great was such a surprise and so rare, I decided to do a little mini feature on him before this weekend. Who wants to wait when I could just do it now!? Not me.

This is one of the only times I have ever liked seeing photos of people on a poster. I know I griped about it last time, but this actually works. I can’t tell you why, and I think it’s something I’ll have to study and think about. Why is he able to make it work when so many others just fail miserably? I dunno. Maybe you know? Maybe you want to tell me?

Now, I’m not saying that I’m in love with all of these. What I am saying is that he has a surprisingly developed sense of posterness that he deserves to get a little golf-clap sort of kudos from Hi There Hammy. Kudos Gigo… keep rocking that style and that name.

Hey hey! Welcome to the letter D of our gigposter extravaganza! I’ve waded my way through some moderately angry posters, sprinkled with a bit of nudity and topped with some really bad posters to bring you these lovelies. I have discovered two things during the course of my research: 1) I don’t like photos in gigposters (and by photos I mean photographic images… something about them always looks super cheesy, even if they’re being “ironic” or something) and 2.) if your design name is something naughty I will hate your work 100% of the time (it probably takes a certain personality to even think about marketing themselves under a naughty name and the design that comes out of that same brain is equally terrible). Yuck. Anywho, moving on to better, prettier things… here’s this week’s installment! Enjoy…

Ricardo Delrancho

With a name like Ricardo Delrancho, how can you not be awesome!? I like where he’s going in all of these… his color palette is great, the images are great… oh man, I like him.

Pablo Delcielo

I like his style. It reminds me of the Ticking by Renee French. He only has a few posters and I hope he keeps making more.

Michale Deforge

I love what’s going on in these posters! But this is another case where I definitely don’t want to be hanging around in the same brain that these came out of. This is such a great little horse dude… how can you not love it?

Mat Daly

Is doing some sort of cut paper-esque thing and I dig it. The images he’s choosing and the way he’s cramming some very cool detail. Definitely worth looking at and YES that does mean you! Go lookie look!

Hugh Dandrade

I really love this poster and I like where his style is going but I feel like most of his work is all the same. Which is good separately, but if you see it all together like you do on Gig it gets a little redundant. Ohhh how I do like this one!

Drowning Creek Studio

I like this particular poster a lot, and I like about a teaspoonful of their style, but I got bored going very far back into their gallery on Gig. They’re channeling some sort of Australian theme… or something…. and it’s great, it works on the first page. Stay there and you won’t be missing much.

Dog & Pony Showprints

Has some nice things going on… but I think this is one of those times where they’re just starting to develop whatever their voice is. You can see the same thing happening in the first two pages of any of these artists’ pages on Gig, I’m going to be expecting some good things from Dog & Pony if they keep making things.

Is WACKY TACKY, in an awesome “Things are getting weird, so lemme bust this out for a sec” kind of way. I don’t want to be in whoever’s head this stuff is pouring out of, but I’m really charmed by the end product.

Dkng

I love their Conor Oberst poster. LOVE it LOVE it LOVE it! They do some nice work, check it out.

Delicious

Has a huge number of really, really nice posters. Someone has put a lot of love into all of these to make them look so beautiful, and really in the end, they’re just gig posters. However, I think that it’s designers like Delicious that have elevated gigposters above the level of mere advertisements. I wanna hang these suckers on my walls and stare at them all darn day.

Anthony Dihle

He has a really nice color palette and layering technique that makes everything look like you’re looking at a well done 3-D poster… without the glasses.

Welcome to the third installment of gigposter.com artists! It’s a good week for the letter “C“, so here it is!

Scott Campbell
He’s been a busy dude. This is just a small sampling of the 169 posters on the website. I think his latest work is the best, but it might be worth it to go through his collection starting at the end and working forward just so that you can see his vision develop.

Frida Clements
All four posters are great. I like the Bonnie Prince Billy one because there’s some crazy shape-action going on. I can’t tell whether the shape is a reclining woman or not… I’d like to think it is, maybe. My brain is trying desperately to define that shape… which might be a detractor in the end.

Ciler

There’s only two posters, but I loved both of them.

Capital A

There are some interesting perspectives going on in these posters, it’s definitely worth checking out how they incorporate type into some of their designs.

I really like these chunky illustrations he’s doing in a few of his posters and the color palette is nice. I’d like to hear this band, wouldn’t you?

Kristin Cheung

I like the color palette she uses, it gives her posters some unity.

Jason Carty

He only has one poster, but it’s a doozy! I love how he’s using line and type. It’s clear and beautiful.

With a name like that, how could you NOT make great posters? I picked this one because the band name was clearest however I like all of hers and now I think this one is probably my least favorite of hers…

I really like how he’s divided this poster into section and tells a little story. Totally unique from anything I’ve seen so far.

GigPoster – B -

Last week I went through GigPoster’s “A” section of designers, this week I’m gonna do the big “B” section of their designer alphabet. I’ve figured out that if your name starts with a “B” then you’re pretty likely to do better gigposters than if your name starts with an “A”. I wonder if the designers get better the farther into the alphabet I get. Hmmm… I smell a hypothesis coming on. Go science!

I’m also starting to realize that the goal of a gigposter isn’t to draw new listeners into concerts but to a.) get the word out that this band is coming on this date to this place and then b.) to be cherished as art. They don’t need to convince you to come listen to this band, they just need to get those three pieces of info out and then be sought after for their aesthetic appeal. Really, they’re great for the band and the artist. Some of the ones I’ve chosen this week are great because they’re beautiful and some even manage to get the band and artist noticed. Click on the pictures to go to that artist’s page… it’s worth it so do it.

If you haven’t heard of gigposters.com already, you’re about to. They have a huge collection of band posters (you know, those things you see plastering street lights and buildings) organized by band and artist. I’ve been browsing through all the posters for years now and I’ve decided to go through alphabetically by artist and pick out my favorite groups/artists. Then I’m going to post one example poster from said artist here with a link to that artist’s page. Anyway, this is going to be a weekly occurance. Check out the wonderful letter “B” next week.
