Well, it’s Wednesday again (there’s nothing like doing something on the same day every week to make you realize how quickly that week goes by!) so here’s a little snapshot of the garden.
The carrots are still doing their thing, you know… growing, greening, leafing, etc.
The peas are looking great, but peeking at the little pods makes me feel like I just stepped into a B grade horror film about aliens. When the sun is shining through them you can see all the babies lined up and the little plant veins feeding them… it’s a little like walking in on someone in the delivery room.
The strawberries are still trying to send out a massive number of runners and I keep clipping them back. I don’t want ten million strawberry plants competing for the same amount of sunshine next year.
The beans are all doing their thing and so are the squash. I need to push that grate off the squash to give them some more breathing room. The beans show no signs of flowering or beaning yet, so I guess we’ll have that to look forward to later.
Those darn potatoes are still going bananza in their box. I can’t believe how tall they are! That’ll be a harvest I can’t wait to photograph.
UPDATA time! Look out! I know I did a mini one on Monday so you’ll just have to suffer patiently, you saint, you!
The blubberies are doing quite well. Dad built them a little pen because we caught Willow licking all the bushes. Hopefully this will keep the robins, jays and Willow out long enough for some of them to get ripe enough.
Look at these babies do… something. They’re still way too tiny to let outside very often, hopefully it’ll happen before winter. The basil is on the right and sage is one the left.
Look at all these bush beans! Mummy got four Indian Runner beans which are climbing up the poles in the midst of all their bushy cousins. There’s tons of squash coming up on the other side of the boxes. Most of them are seeds I saved when I went through my squash baking faze in the winter (note, the squash in the recipe pictures isn’t the one whose seeds now reside in the yard).
Holy POTATO! Check these out! They’re up to my waist now in all of their potato glory.
The yukon potatoes have their first flower! And surprise surprise, it’s a much lighter color than the blue potato flowers I took pictures of on Monday.Those is some carrots. They sure are purty. I’m still not convinced that they’ll be worth it, but since they’re already here I’m going to let them do their thing and see what happens.
The parsnips are getting bigger! They even have some real leaves.
Look how big and happy those peas are! They’re making lots of pods but we’ll have to wait a little longer before they’ve filled out properly.
We have more tomatoes stashed in the garden (two beefsteaks, one cherry and something else) besides the two plants on the deck.
This bush is producing ‘maters like mad! They’re getting bigger and bigger every day! Dad was suggesting some fried green tomatoes, we’ll see if that happens. I’ve never tried so it’ll be a fun experiment, no?
Hey hey! It’s ‘mato time again!
One of the tomato plants is producing tomatoes like there’s no tomorrow while the other ones seem content to keep growing upwards and outwards.
We’ve been having some unfortunate strawberry casualties in the garden. Ants have been gnawing them to pieces before they become ripe. Mummy put some ant traps out there, we’ll see if those work.
Oh man, the first yellow squash has poked its adorable leafy-greenness up! I’m so excited!
The sage is doing it’s thing quite nicely without any help. The basil is a bit on the developmentally challenged side, it seems happy enough to stay the same size that it has for the last month. I’m going to not post about it until it decides to join the big kids at the grown up table.
Those potatoes are still growing with some freakish determination. I literally watched them grow 1/4 inch in three hours. INSANE. I really should find some more dirt to cover them up with. Then we’ll have lotsa potatoes.
The peas are still climbing upwards and onwards as peas tend to do.
But now they’re accompanied by flowers! Pea flowers mean pea fruit which means peas in my tummy!
Oh man oh man the parsnips have ARRIVED! At last.
Those carrots continue to be lame. Only half of them germinated and they germinated right next to each other! Soon I’ll have to thin the suckers out (and yes mom, you DO need to thin carrots. I’ll just do it when you’re not looking anyway.).

The beans are still kickin’ it in the fast lane. They’ve got their first set of adult leaves to compliment their enormous baby leaves.
I feel like I just posted about all of this stuff. Has it already been a week? Sheesh…
Well, it’s that time again. Yes, it’s garden time. Ya’ll should be glad that I don’t post about this stuff every day (although I do go out and fawn over it several times a day).
I think I might stick to doing beans and peas! Sheesh. I need that instant gratification (I can see these guys growing, they move so fast!) and the carrots are definitely not doing it for me.
Mom and I went to Burns feedstore yesterday and got some patty pans (left) and slicing cucumbers (center) and then in the picture below there are some beefsteaks and a roma tomato plant (along back of box) and some chickpeas (yes, those are some red curlers sheltering the chickpeas). I’ve never done chickpeas before, so that should be interesting.
The thtwabewwies are ripening up… Mom’s been sneaking some of the riper ones. There is nothing better than fresh strawberries still warm from the sun.
My carrots! They’re…. doing things. Slowly. Boooorrriinnnggg…. Still no sign of the parsnips either.
But their pea neighbors have already made it up to the second string! Woot!
The basil is also doing things…. slowly. I hope they’ll make it. My hopes aren’t high, they seem to be really weak and prone to falling over.
The sage, on the other hand, was off to a slow start but it seems to be making up for lost time. They’re sturdy and I can see some little “real leaves” poking up between those little baby leaves already.
It’s that time again, time to check in with the garden greenery. This past week I planted the beans and parsnips in the beds. Hopefully we’ll see some action in a couple of weeks from those guys. The only seeds I have left to plant are brussels sprouts, cucumbers and squash!
The strawberries are growing dandily, they’re even starting to blush a little red around the edges and sending out runners.
Both ‘maters are doing really well, there’s a good handful of green tomatoes on both despite the crazy weather.
Oh man, the carrots have finally decided to put in an appearance. I was getting really tired of waiting.
The peas are still chuggin along. Some of them are trying to strangle their neighbors and others are climbing right up my rather unattractive trellis. Maybe some flowers will start to appear soon. That would be cool.
Inside, the basil is still popping up, doing their thing in the window.
And I even found a tiny sage plant, it took long enough didn’t it? I think so.
Our Forget Me Nots are so happy and pretty! We got a plant from one of our neighbors and found the other somewhere in the yard. The bees love them and, if you get real close, you can smell them faintly.
Potatoes grow between the roots and the top of the plant, so if you keep adding more dirt around them as they grow, it’ll creat more potatoes as the plant grows taller to reach for the sun. I added a couple of inches to the taller plants today and I think I’ll just keep slowly mounding dirt as they grow at their own pace.
So, I promise I’ve been doing this these past couple of weeks… besides updating this blog. One of these “things” just happens to be gardening. Here’s a plan for what’s going to be in our raised beds, if it’s not in there already…
The potatoes, peas, strawberries and carrots are already in. We had to put an old iron gate over the beds to keep cats from pooping all up in the teeny tiny seeds. Yucky cats. Oh and those big bushy things in front of the beds are three blueberry bushes.
Remember how big the peas were last week? Well now they’re getting some leaves and I’m pretty sure they’re all up now. Rows and rows of tiny green pea-babies.
I found a tutorial on Little House in the Suburbs last night for little containers to start seeds in using recycled newspaper. Speaking of newspapers, Mom canceled our subscription to the Oregonian after they repeatedly failed to deliver the paper, even though we called to tell them they hadn’t been by. You can get all that newsy stuff online these days anyway and save some trees in the process. Well, since we canceled we’ve been getting more “free trial papers” plunked on our mailbox than we ever got when we were actually paying for it. The bastards are essentially littering on our lawn by leaving their stupid papers to get rained on and yucky. They’re mostly full of advertisements anyway. Can you tell I’m more than a little irritated?
Sigh.. back to my point. Now I got to use up four pages (yes, a stupendous sum, really) to plant sage and basil in. I’m pretty sure that by the time they’re big enough to transplant the containers will have naturally decomposed a bit too! This is a much craftier way of starting seeds than the old egg carton method.
Oh and we have our planter boxes all done in the front yard! I planted my lemon basil, lemon verbena, spearmint, chocolate mint and apple mint in there… ohhh this is going to be so good!
